NOTES about Adobe® Illustrator .ai / .art paths importer.
Overview:
This menu command is able to convert files saved or exported as .ai/.art from vectorial programs such as Freehand®, Illustrator®, Photoshop®.
The paths are imported in Vectorworks as lines, polygons and polylines with bezier curves.
Due to the difference in beziers used by vectorial programs and cad programs (cubic vs quadratic) the resulting path is an approximation of the original even if it is practically identical.
The importer produces points, lines, polygons and polylines in the active class.
No line colors, fills, gradients, effects, graphics or texts are imported from this program. Just the paths, even if grouped or compound.
In fact, it is advisable to import from "only paths" files though the program should do its work anyway.
Installation:
You should place the plugin in the VectorWorks plugin folder, then open VectorWorks, menu files -> schemes, choose to edit the active scheme (or a copy), add the new plugin command (you find it in Import/Export folder on the left) in the file -> Import menu section on the right.
Exit to the program, now you should see the new menu under file -> Import.
Usage:
VectorScript language has the limited capability to open text files only documents. So if you can't open files .ai or .art, just change their extension to .txt.
Be careful, files have to be actually text files and not data files, that is you have to be able to open and browse their content with a common text editor.
